Cholesterol is a kind of waxy substance that is used by our body for the protection of our nerves, and is also used to make cell tissues in our body. Roaming The Isles Of My Local Grocery Store To Build A List Of Food That Lower Cholesterol
In trying to come up with a list of food that lower cholesterol I made a trip to my local grocery store for inspiration. As you probably realize today we know a lot more about cholesterol, and ways to lower cholesterol levels, than we did even 5 years ago. Equally helpful is the new labeling that spells out the amount of saturated fat a product contains, making it possible to be our own cholesterol detectives without having to do any extra investigative work.
Upon arriving the first section I passed through was the bread section. While bread is not necessarily the most nutritious of choices, it is certainly one of a few select list of food that lower cholesterol levels. With total fat around 3% and 0% saturated fat it is an excellent choice. Nevertheless, a certain amount of vigilance is required. Some breads are very high in sugar, while the white bread varieties should be replaced with multigrain selections or if possible, flax or sugar free varieties.
My next stop on my merry road to form a list of food that lower cholesterol levels landed me right in the middle of cholesterol reduction heaven; the vegetable and fruit area. A number of fresh fruits and vegetables are high in the soluble fiber which soaks up cholesterol like a sponge and carries it right out the old tailpipe. Both pears and apples are good examples. Additionally, certain fruits contain what are known as resveratrol, the flavonoid that some experts believe is one of the very best natural cholesterol lowering substances known to man. Dark grapes, and particularly the skin of dark grapes, contain very high levels. Other foods that get an honorable mention are fresh broccoli, bananas, and the often forget pomegranate.
So far so good! Two sections and nothing but foods to go on our list of food that lower cholesterol levels. But utopia is about to come crashing down in the meat section. I spotted a package of ground turkey that was labeled 43% less fat than ground meat. That cow they were comparing this turkey to must have been feed butter and fat for months to get its weight up, because this ground turkey was not the healthy alternative I was expecting. A four ounce serving contained 25% saturated fat and 28% cholesterol. As you may already know a heart healthy diet consists of no more than 10% saturated fat. There was one item that caught my eye and that was 97% fat free franks. Each frank contained only 1 g of saturated fat!
My last stop on my search and find mission to build a list of food that lower cholesterol was the dairy section. While there were some foods that where so high in cholesterol that I almost passed out due to my fear of heights (cheese, cream cheese, butter) there were others that actually could be placed on our list of food that lower cholesterol levels. Certain yogurts (4%), skin milk (0%), and margarines (8%) containing stanols and sterols were just a few of the cholesterol healthy choices. I guess those dairy guys have been busy trying to create heart healthy options.
The above article is just a snapshot into my trip to come up with a list of food that lower cholesterol levels. You should try it yourself the next time you are shopping, who knows what surprises could be in store.
Additionally, many natural health minded individuals have been combining smart diet choices with cholesterol reducing supplements to create a powerful one two punch to knock out problem cholesterol levels. This is a safe and effective natural approach worth considering for those serious about achieving and maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels.
