Mobile Phone Health Risk Concerns
The question over whether mobile phones pose any real health risk has been debated for some time, and there is still no clear answer. The World Health Organisation and other reputable authorities have said that there is no conclusive evidence that using mobile or cell phones can damage your health.
While there is no evidence as yet of harm, there is cause for concern, and indeed concern has been raised by some scientists because these phones do emit radiation. They do not produce ionising radiation which is known to cause DNA damage in living cells that can lead to cancer, but radiation of a lower frequency similar to that used in microwave ovens. Given that this radiation, admittedly in small amounts, is being produced so close to the brain when you hold a phone to your ear, it seems quite possible that it could have an effect on brain cells, if only in an accumulative way. In other words, being exposed to low level radiation over a long period of time, could be as damaging as exposure to high level radiation for a short period of time. Cell damage from low level radiation may not be severe enough to cause DNA disruption, but could still cause malfunction in some way that we don’t yet know about.
The biggest worry is that more and more children are using mobile phones from an early age, and some of these children spend over two hours a day chatting! It is recognised and generally agreed that electromagnetic radiation from phones does penetrate the skull, and, even if nothing else, does raise the temperature of brain tissue by a small amount. The effect is the same as that when food is cooked in a microwave oven. It’s the same energy, the same wavelength, but a much smaller strength. Children, however, have thinner skulls than adults, so hence a given amount of radiation will penetrate deeper or have a greater effect.
A second source for concern comes from recent studies which seem to support the findings of a previous Swedish study where there was shown to be a correlation between long term use of mobile phones and malignant brain tumour. The incidence of brain tumour is increasing very rapidly, and so is the use of mobile phones. Are the two connected? We do not know, but, what other explanation has been offered for this increase in the number of brain tumours?
Some experts have said that prolonged use of a mobile phone can double the risk of developing a brain tumour. Commercial interests have played this down, but we may be on the verge of a major public health problem. Unfortunately, it can take up to ten years before a tumour can be spotted, by which time the prognosis for treatment is very poor.
It is essential that people are more aware of these health risks and limit their use of mobile phones or take steps to minimise the risk by use of protective devices.
Protect yourself and your family from mobile phone radiation. See here how to do this:
